Simu plants their Matariki Kumara. Sprouted Term 2, planted Term 3 2016 |
Garden weeded in preparation for planting out green house seedlings |
The green house team has been sprouting seeds during term 2. |
Cauliflower, brocolli, mesclun mix have sprouted and been lovingly watered with worm wee from the compost bins. |
Our annual disco was held at the start of term 3. Check out this cool way we've kept waste to a minimum. Thanks to all the dishwashers on the day!
Winter 2016 has seen a boom in the Olive harvest available around Matairangi Mt Vic. Here are some of the ways we've been celebrating Matariki with the harvest and the impending festival of eating tapenade!
Kia ora whanau,
The Enviro team have come up with a name for our mini olive harvesting antics. We are now known as “Olive’s Olives” as we have a lovely girl called Olive in our group. Isn't that funny! Our team has been picking plenty of olives from the giant olive trees on Kent Terrace. We would love it if you could please continue to donate any more washed and clean jars (with lids) and deliver them to Sandy’s class. We would like to thank everyone for the jar donations and all of the support you have all put in to help us.
Please leave us a comment! We’d love to know your thoughts.
Since we established our vision map, our Envirogroup, teachers and parents have been very active.
We have introduced paper recycling as well as going to digital copies of newsletters.
Our food is being composted, which makes our worms happy.
We have planted the front of the school in native plants, as well as bordering it with macrocarpa logs.
Swan plants and flowers now grow in reused car tyres.
Replanting the front
At CQS, we have a planting group as part of the enviro group.
Our project is to do up the front of the school for the 125th anniversary.
The Berhampore plant nursery kindly gave us some plants.
Before we started planting, we needed to plan where abouts to put each plant. Along the front, we put ice-block sticks with the name of the plant on it in the spot where we would put the plant.
The day we planted the whole enviro group helped and Stu, Tim (parents who are part of the enviro group) Micheline, Sandy and Leon. It took all lunch time but the outcome was great! We also had to do some weeding to make sure they won't grow through the mulch we're going to put on the dirt
On Saturday, helped put down sleepers, then on Sunday parents and students added mulch. It was two beautiful days.
Our next steps are to make a plan for how we are going to take care of the plants. We hope the front of the school looks great for the anniversary!
Tracking and Trapping
A huge thanks to Becky from DOC for coming in to talk to us about tracking tunnels. We have noticed that we have several hedgehogs, and possibly some mice and rats in the school grounds. At present we're just monitoring the predators that are in our school environment, and some Enviro students have taken both tracking and trapping tunnels home over the Easter holiday break. Check out these instructions for how best to bait the "Victor" trap.
